A brand name renowned for powerful performance and durability and a series that is touted as one of the most powerful road companions ever- there is good reason why the 2019 generation of the Chevrolet Colorado has been facing high expectations since its launch. From towing heavy load to beating the roughest terrains to carrying kids around safely- the Colorado is known to do it all and do a class-leading job at that. The fact that it is highly customization had us more hyped up about this launch, because we could not wait to see what added features and upgradations this generation came with. Priced at a reasonable $22,395, this 7700-pound machine had our attention instantly.
Overview: Available in two cab and cargo-bed styles, the new Colorado can be combined with any one of the six powertrain options. This is exactly the kind of customisation we expect from Chevrolet. And we are not disappointed. So far. This 2019 follow-up to the 2015 launch is available in Three new premium exterior-colour choices—Crush, Pacific Blue Metallic, and Shadow Gray Metallic, while the Centennial Blue Metallic, Deepwood Green Metallic, and Graphite Metallic have been phased out.
What is the make of this machine like?
Moving on to the engine, the base model is equipped with a four-cylinder with a manual transmission, while the upgraded one is a speedy 308-hp V-6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Like all standard Colorados, this generation is equipped with the Trailer-sway control—which applies the brakes of both the truck and the trailer if the system senses the trailer is swaying excessively. The best part about the diesel and the gasoline varieties is that both engines perform equally powerfully in our tests.
How does it perform?
Fuel economy is average for this Colorado. The gasoline version turns out a 20-mpg city and 26 mpg highway with the automatic; it gets 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway with the six-speed manual., while the diesel variety clocks in with 22/30 mpg city/highway.
How fun and comfortable is the all new Colorado?
Now comes the interior and the infotainment, which we were most excited to see upgradations in. A sufficiently spacious interior with deep centre-console bin and a massive compartment under the crew cab’s rear seat add a touch of convenience to this mean machine, as this space can be easily used to store delicate stuff that you would not want to load up in the boot. The infotainment has been majorly upgraded to include a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, two intuitive touchscreens, and the introduction of Chevrolet Infotainment System 3, which is quite impressive for this class and almost takes it to top of class position. The upgraded trims come with Bluetooth streaming, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, which are not available in the base model.
Is it safe to drive the all new Colorado?
Apart from basic safety features like standard front, bolster, curtain, and rear curtain airbags, Chevrolet has made the unique and very useful Teen Driver System a standard feature for every trim: this allows parents to monitor the speed and location of the truck and mute the radio until all occupants have buckled their seatbelts. Premium safety features like lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning are available only in the LT trim.
Our verdict: Overall, the 2019 generation of this much-loved pickup truck continues to impress. It is the perfect blend of pickup capability and everyday practicality.
