Based on the award-winning compact luxury SUV, the XC 40 is a pure electric SUV, the first fully electric offering from the brand. Volvo has launched the car under their new ‘Recharge’ sub-brand which the automaker plans to expand at a rapid pace. Volvo has plans to launch a new fully electric vehicle every year for the next 5 years to ensure that electric vehicles make 50% of its global sales by 2025.

You won’t be able to differentiate the electric version from the IC engine-powered car at first glance. But step to the front of the car and you can notice a clear change in the nose grille and a ‘Recharge’ badging at the rear. You also get some additional storage space under the hood since the engine is not as big as the traditional car.

The car is powered by 2 electric motors that churn out 408 PS of power and 660 Nm of torque using both its motors. Volvo claims that its78 kWh battery can travel more than 400 km at a single charge as per the WLPT certification. The battery can be charged using a 159 kW DC fast-charger which can charge the car up to 80% in just 40 minutes or you have the other option of charging it using 11 kW AC charger.

The car gets a completely new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system and also supports the ‘Volvo on Call’, the company’s digital services connected platform. Volvo gives you a task- to find the start and stop button when you sit inside the car. But, there isn’t one. One of the most striking features of the car is that it doesn’t have a start button on the dashboard in front of you but instead, it’s integrated into the seat. Yes, the car driver seat has sensors which allow the driver to simply sit in the car, press the brake pedal and voila, off you go. The car is expected to be launched in India this year.
